As the Lenten Season begins, let me update you on the various activities your council is undertaking or has already completed. First, we had a great Wives Appreciation Dinner on Saturday February 6th, once we decided to have it. We had an excellent attendance of brothers and guests, and everyone had a great time. The staff at Ravello’s did an excellent job. Everything from the Hot and Cold hors d'oeuvres to the dessert table was spectacular. Special thanks to Larry Colasurdo, Rich Truzzolino and Tony Giuliano for all their hard work on soliciting donations for our wives and having the dinner that night. Next, I would like to congratulate two (2) new members who completed their First Degree on February 8th. They are Michael Trocchia and Frank Manno. Welcome to the East Hanover Knights of Columbus. I would like to congratulate the winners of our Annual Spelling Bee, held on Saturday February 13th tat the East Hanover Middle School. We had a great turnout, 47 students all together, with 15 from St. Rose of Lima Academy and the rest from the Middle School. The First Place winner was, Michael Cerniglia and the Second Place winner was Stephanie Cardoso. The competition lasted for six rounds. Congratulations to everyone who participated. I would like to thank Larry Colasurdo for organizing and running the Spelling Bee. I would also like to thank Neale Baxter, Sal Davide, Fred Donatelli and Rich Truzzolino for also helping out. The Diocesan competition is set for Sunday February 28th, at St. James School in Totowa. The Finals are scheduled for April 11th, with a place to be determined. So watch for announcements on that. Our next event is a Pancake Breakfast set for Sunday February 28th at Fahey Hall, from 8 AM to 1:30 PM. The cost is $ 6.00 per adult, $ 3.00 for children and $ 12.00 for families. This is one of many family events that we plan to undertake and encourage throughout the year. Andy Liebhauser is the chair and tickets can be purchased from him. I know Andy has a list of Brothers who signed up. We will be setting up on Saturday evening February 27th. The Pancake Breakfast proceeds will provide for the purchase of a piece of equipment for a family here in East Hanover. At our last meeting a motion was made and seconded that the Council spend an amount up to $ 500.00 to purchase this piece of equipment for a child who would benefit from having this at home. He already uses it at school. Our rules require that we publish and then vote on any expenditure not in our budget, we are publishing this in our newsletter and we will vote on it at our next meeting. Please support this endeavor in any way that you can. Remember, one of our virtues is charity. The next event coming up is the St. Patrick’s Day Dinner and Dance, this year it will be held on Saturday March 13th, in Fahey Hall at 7 PM. See the flyer in the newsletter for more details. I need someone to handle the tickets and decorations. John MacTaggart has volunteered to do the cooking and Chris Virginio will be handling the purchasing of the corned beef and other items needed for the festivities. We also still need kitchen hands, a setup crew, serving crew and clean up crew so sign up at our next meeting. Joe Pasquarosa and Tony Giuliano are co- chairing the Super 50/50, to be drawn at the St. Patrick’s Day Dinner. The tickets are $ 20.00 each. We have 400 to sell. This is the council’s biggest fund raiser, so I expect each brother to buy at least one ticket. So that leaves roughly half of the remaining tickets to be sold to family and friends. Last year we sold all 400 of them and I expect we can do the same this year but, there’s not that much time to do it. Please give Joe or Tony a call if you wish to buy a ticket or need tickets to sell. I also want to mention the Retreat that Father Owen and Father Hubert is offering and has invited the entire parish to attend on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, February 23rd to the 25th, as part of our Lenten opportunities for prayer, reflection, reconciliation and spiritual growth. The program will be put on by Father Maciej Zajac, the Associate Pastor of St. Teresa of Avila in Summit. The program starts each evening at 7:00 PM and will last approximately one hour. Hope to see you there. The Handicapped Citizens Drive will be April 22nd to April 25th this year. Please mark your calendars. Here is this month’s quote: "The world is moving so fast these days that the man who says it can't be done is generally interrupted by someone doing it."
